Transfer to another class – Atelier Espenaer

Transfer to another class

It is possible to be transferred to another class up till 10 days before the start of the course that you originally booked. How this transferring works depends on the following situations:

  1. Spots announced in course availability alert
Spots that were announced in the course availability alert (the newsletter) are not available for transfers until 12 hours after the publication time mentioned in the course availability alert. Transfer requests send before or within these 12 hours will not be processed!

If you do not want to wait out of fear that the spot(s) may sell out within those 12 hours, you are free to directly book the spot yourself at the given publication time through the normal online booking procedure (i.e. as you were a new customer) and subsequently cancel your previous booking. Please note that, in that case, the cancellation and refund conditions explained on this page will apply.

This policy is to ensure that all subscribers to the course availability alert have an equal chance to obtain the announced spot(s).

  2. Open spots in course schedule
For spots that just appear available in the course schedule and for which the conditions mentioned above at 1. do not apply, just send an email to info@espenaer.com with your request for a transfer and the order number of your original booking.

  3. No (suitable) classes available?
If there are no other classes available in the course schedule or if the available classes don’t suit you, then your only option left is cancelling your registration altogether and book anew when new classes are added to the schedule. It is not possible to reserve a spot in a future class that is not yet scheduled. For more about cancellation and refunds, please read this page.

Transferring within 9 days of the start of the course is not possible and any requests in this respect will be dealt with similar to cancellation requests within the same term.

About Atelier Espenaer

Atelier Espenaer is an Amsterdam-based atelier established and run by artisanal furniture maker Umut Lucas Espenaer.

What does Atelier Espenaer offer?

1

Bespoke furniture and other custom items

2

Exclusive independent work for sale

The atelier also designs and creates standalone pieces as part of its own independent work. Free from commission constraints, these masterpieces represent the pinnacle of Espenaer’s artistic vision and skills.

3

Woodworking courses

Atelier Espenaer is also of service to those who wish to learn to create things themselves. Its courses provide a comprehensive introduction to the craft, allowing participants to gain a foundational understanding of the techniques and tools used.

4

Workspaces for woodworking

Finally, the atelier opens its doors to fellow enthusiasts of woodworking and offers workspaces for rent on an hourly basis. The spaces offer everything to create pieces with one’s own hands in an inspiring and authentic environment.

Espenaer’s values

At Atelier Espenaer, we are driven by a set of values that guide us in every aspect of our work. From sourcing materials to crafting furniture, we strive to bring quality, sustainability, individuality, and artisanship to our pieces. General course information

groupsClass size

expand_circle_down

The courses are explicitly focused on individual guidance and personal contact with (and among) course participants. For this reason, the number of participants per course is limited to a maximum of 6.

The small size of the class makes it easy to switch between plenary instructions and individual guidance. If you don’t fully understand something or need help with a particular skill, you will easily and quickly be assisted by the instructor, because there are just 6 participants in the group, including you!

Similarly, because the instructor is overseeing just the 6 of you in the workshop, he can quickly step in if he sees that you are doing something wrong, even when you are not aware of it yourself.

The courses are offered in Espenaer’s own atelier, located in Het Ambachtslab in Amsterdam-West. The atelier is easy to reach by bike, car, and public transportation. There is ample parking space in front of the building (Paid parking). Participants will receive more detailed directions upon registration.

schoolAbout the instructor

expand_circle_down

The courses are instructed by artisanal furniture maker and founder of Atelier Espenaer, Umut Lucas Espenaer. Umut has over 15 years of experience in woodworking and specializes in artisanal skills, techniques, and hand tools. He originally started woodworking as a hobby before turning it into his trade and is self-taught. He has been offering woodworking courses since 2017 and has had the pleasure of instructing to several hundreds of participants up till now.

For a furniture maker, Umut has a somewhat unusual professional background. He was originally trained as a political scientist and worked as policy officer at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as lecturer at the University of Amsterdam for most of his professional life. He decided to switch careers and pursue his passion, left his career in academia, and founded Atelier Espenaer. He is very passionate about artisanal woodworking and enjoys helping others explore their own creativity.

Bespoke furniture and other custom items

Bespoke furniture and other items

Atelier Espenaer creates exclusive furniture pieces and other items on the request of clients. Each work is unique and is designed and crafted specially for the client on a one-off basis. It addresses the individual needs of the client and offers the best in terms of craftsmanship, design, and materials.

What makes Espenaer’s work stand out?

Artisanal techniques

Espenaer specializes in the use of artisanal techniques and particularly traditional woodworking joints.

Beautiful handpicked hardwoods

Only sustainably sourced hardwoods, handpicked for their beauty, are used in Espenaer’s works. Espenaer does not work with plywood, mdf, chipboards, metal, or plastics.

Unique designs

Espenaer’s works feature a unique style of design, inspired by early 20th century art and design movements. Curious? Have a look at Espenaer’s portfolio.

When should you commission a bespoke piece?

Designing and crafting one-of-a-kind items out of solid hardwood using artisanal techniques is an endeavor that demands skill, ingenuity, labor, and time. This makes commissioning a bespoke piece particularly fitting in the following cases:

1

A showstopper

You are looking for a work of extraordinary design, something that will become an showstopper in your interior.

This stunning work was commissioned by a client who wanted a cabinet that was so marvelous, that it would make you forget that it holds a TV.

2

Custom solution

You have particular needs or demands that can only be addressed satisfactorily with a custom-made item.

The client had acquired this vintage leadlight and wanted a matching case to turn it into a lightbox. This case was custom made for the leadlight.

3

Exclusivity

You want a genuinely unique item in your interior, something that distinguishes your interior and cannot be found anywhere else.

The client commissioning this table wanted to match the uniqueness of his beautiful old bonsai with an equally unique table to put it on. The design was inspired by the intricate root system of the tree.

4

Sustainable craftsmanship

You would like to have a furniture piece sustainably made by a craftsman instead of a factory-made item.

This conference table was made for an environmental NGO, who wanted it made by a local craftsman out of locally salvaged wood, instead of a nondescript factory-made mass-product.

How does a voucher work?

The following steps show you how to book a voucher and what the procedure looks like:

  1. Select a voucher and add it to your cart.
  2. If you wish to keep it a surprise for the time being, provide your own contact details during checkout, not those of the recipient. If you have already told the recipient of the gift, it is best to provide their contact details.
  3. Once your order is processed, you will receive the voucher at the email address you have provided during checkout. This usually takes one day on week days.
  4. Offer the voucher to the recipient. The voucher contains instructions for the recipient.
  5. Following these instructions, the recipient will be able to register for a course on a date that suits them best.

Be aware that when the recipient uses the voucher, they will inevitably also see the course price. If you do not want this, it is better not to buy a voucher, but instead directly book a course yourself for the recipient.

| #en

Espenaer icon

Offering a course as a gift

It is also possible to offer this course as a gift to someone else. You can do so in two ways:

  1. Choose a class yourself in the schedule above and book it for the recipient. If you want to keep it a surprise for the time being, fill in your own contact details during the registration.
  2. Buy a gift voucher and give the voucher to the recipient. The recipient can choose a class themselves depending on their availability and use the voucher for payment. Click here to buy a voucher.
Note that vouchers are not available if there are not enough classes available in the schedule. With limited availability, there is nothing or too little to choose and that defeats the whole purpose of the voucher. In this case, you can revert to the first option.

What will you be learning in Course Twee?

Are you wondering what you will be learning in Course Twee? This virtual tour will take you through the lessons. The photos are from earlier classes of Course Twee.

1. Blind mortise and tenon

Since we have covered the basics already in Course Eén, we can jump straight to what Course Twee is about: traditional wood joinery. After having acquired a general understanding of traditional wood joinery, you will start making your first joint: the blind mortise and tenon.

2. Through mortise and tenon

After having gained some experience with the blind mortise and tenon, we will do a slightly more challenging version of the mortise and tenon: the through mortise and tenon. Joinery requires different techniques than we had used in Course Eén, so apart from the joint itself, you will also acquire new techniques with hand tools.

3. Box joint

The third joint you will learn is again a little more challenging than the previous one. This time it’s not a mortise and tenon though, but a box joint. The box joint is cut in a different way too; you will learn a new technique with the chisel.

4. Dovetail joint

The final joint you will learn is the much appreciated dovetail joint. The dovetail joint is the most difficult among the basic joints and is considered a symbol of traditional craftsmanship.

By now, you should have figured that creating these joints is a more sophisticated endeavor than what we did in Course Eén. As such, Course Twee presses you to learn to work overall in a more accurate and refined way and bring your skills to a higher level.

What will you be learning in Course Eén?

To give you a better idea of what you can expect in Course Eén, we are happy to take you through the lessons with a visual tour.

The photos are from earlier classes of Course Eén.

1. The basics: measuring, marking, sawing, and planing

Before you even pick up a saw or a plane, you need to know how to measure and mark accurately and consistently. That is what we start the course with, but these skills remain important in every stage of the making process. Subsequently, you will learn how to properly use a handsaw and a hand plane to create components out of rough lumber for your project.

2. Learning about wood

In the second lesson you will acquire basic knowledge about the material that we work with: solid wood. You will learn about basic properties of wood and the diversity in wood types. After our talk about wood, you will continue with the project you started in the first lesson and gain more experience with sawing and planing. Continuous and repetitive practice is necessary to actually acquire competence. Practice makes perfect, as the expression goes!

3. Learning to make a traditional joint

After having created the components, it is time to to join these components. In this course you will learn to do that using a traditional woodworking joint. There are many types of joints and we will do one of them: the halflap joint. Making the joint requires more refined skills and you will use a different set of tools too, but the practice of the past two lessons will still come in handy.

4. Glue and finishes

Finally, every project naturally needs to be assembled and finished at the end of the making process. For this reason, you will also learn about assembly, glues, and finishes, like oil and varnish, in this course.

Returns

Furniture pieces in online shop

Cooling-off period

You have the right to cancel your purchase for any reason within 14 calendar days after delivery of the purchased furniture piece. In this ‘cooling-off’ period, you may carefully examine the purchased piece with the purpose of discovering its characteristics and features, in a manner as you would do in our atelier or any other store or gallery.

If you happen to be unsatisfied with the piece, you have the right to cancel the purchase before the end of the cooling-off period. In order to do so you are required to notify us by either mail or e-mail, for instance using the example letter here.

Return shipping

The furniture piece will have to be returned to us within 14 calendar days after your cancellation notice. You are responsible for arranging for the return shipping and for covering the costs of the return shipping. You are also fully responsible for the furniture piece itself during the return shipping, until the moment it is delivered to our atelier.

Given the high value of our pieces, we strongly advise you to hire a specialized third party for the return shipping and would consider it our duty to offer recommendations in this respect. The charge for such specialized shipping services within the Netherlands is expected to be between €60.00 and €80.00. For international shipping other fees may apply. Please contact us for more information.

Refund

If the furniture piece is returned to us in original, resaleable condition, the total purchase price will be refunded to you within 14 calendar days from the day we have received the piece. We will use the same payment method as you did, unless otherwise agreed.

Liability for any loss of value

If you have used the furniture piece in excess of what is reasonable in order to examine it, you will be held liable for the decrease in value of the piece your use has caused. You will also be held liable for any loss of value the piece has endured during the return shipping. Once the piece is returned, we will notify you if we have detected any loss of value and if your refund will be lower than the price paid.

Made-to-order furniture pieces

Please note that the cooling-off period and return policy described above does not apply to custom-made furniture pieces, referred to by Espenaer as either ‘bespoke’ or ‘customized’, as these are made specifically according to your specifications and preferences.

Course bookings

  • If you cancel your booking at the latest 10 days before the start of the course, the total course fee will be refunded to you, minus a €6.95 service charge.
  • If you cancel your booking between 9 and 5 days before the start of the course, 50% of the total course fee will be refunded to you, unless a replacement can be found. In that case the total course fee will be refunded to you, minus a €6.95 service charge.

Delivery

Shipping destinations

We ship to addresses across the world, as long as shipping companies provide services to these destinations. The shipping charge depends on the size of your order and if outside Netherlands, also on the country in question.

For furniture pieces, we prefer specialized delivery firms for deliveries within the Netherlands. Smaller items may be shipped with established shipping companies in the Netherlands. For addresses outside the Netherlands we employ the services of established international shipping companies.

Delivery time

For purchases from our shop, we will contact you to make arrangements for the delivery once we have received your payment. In most cases we are able to ship within one week after the payment.

The delivery time of made-to-order furniture pieces is dependent on the size, design, and availability of materials that you have specified. We will give a non-binding indication of the delivery time in our offer and keep you updated on the progress as we build your furniture piece.

Making a furniture piece in an artisanal way is a highly labor-intensive and time-consuming endeavor and is subject to variation in duration due to the fact that the individual qualities of wood, and thus its ‘workability’, may vary from one tree species to another, from one individual tree of the same species to another, and even from one part of the same tree to another. Due to this element of unpredictability in our work, we reserve the right to deviate from the delivery indication in our final offer if the crafting process demands so and only within the limits of reasonability. In such instances, we will always notify you of the changes.

Once we have reached the final stage of the crafting process, we will contact you to make arrangements for the delivery.

Description of our services

Espenaer is an Amsterdam-based artisanal woodworking atelier that designs and makes handcrafted furniture of the highest standards. We make one-off pieces with a unique design using artisanal methods, and solely rely on salvaged wood, reclaimed wood, and timber from certified sustainable sources for materials. We offer our work for sale and make bespoke furniture pieces upon request.

Secondly, Espenaer offers woodworking and furniture making courses and workshops in Dutch and English. Espenaer also offers fully equipped workspaces in our atelier to both amateur and advanced woodworkers.

We adhere to an alternative economic philosophy that values simple, slow, small, and sustainable entrepreneurship, and observe it in our work with a devotion to artisanship, individuality, and environmentalism.

Purchases, orders, course registrations, and workspace bookings

Purchases from our online shop

Espenaer offers its work for sale primarily, but not exclusively, in its online shop. All furniture pieces shown in our shop with a price indication are directly available for purchase. All prices are including VAT.

Furniture pieces without a price indication are not directly available for purchase, but are kept in our shop to serve as models for customized furniture pieces that you may order as part of our Customization Service.

The purchase procedure starts with adding the desired furniture piece to the Cart and subsequently following the instructions on the Checkout page. By adding a piece to your Cart and proceeding to the Checkout page you confirm that you have carefully examined the available information about the piece(s) and that you fully understand the offer.

By clicking the “Place order” button at the bottom of the Checkout page button you agree with these Terms and Conditions and confirm that you have provided accurate billing and shipping details.

By clicking the “Place Order” button you will also have made a binding offer for the purchase of the piece(s) in your Cart. This commits you to the payment of the total purchase price according to the instructions and terms of the selected payment method, as defined on the Checkout page. If the payment term is unspecified for the selected payment method, the payment will have to be fulfilled within 14 calendar days after our confirmation of your order.

Your purchase is completed only if Espenaer has confirmed the reception of your order and once the payment of the purchase price is fulfilled.

Espenaer reserves the right to cancel the purchase if you fail to fulfill your payment obligations within the specified term or if external factors and conditions make it impossible for Espenaer to carry out the purchase.

Instructions on how to use our shop are available here.

Made-to-order furniture

Requests for made-to-order furniture pieces, referred to by Espenaer as either ‘bespoke’ or ‘customized’, can be submitted using the bespoke and customization forms available on our website. In this context, ‘bespoke’ refers to made-to-order furniture pieces designed from scratch, whereas ‘customization’ refers to made-to-order furniture pieces based on an existing model in our shop.

In accordance with our commitment to unique, singular furniture pieces, we will never make an exact copy of an existing model in our shop. A ‘customized’ furniture piece is always a variation to the preferred existing model in terms of dimensions, materials, and design details, and as such a unique, singular furniture piece of its own.

Submitting a request for a made-to-order furniture piece does not commit you to a purchase and is free of charge. Once we have received your request, we will examine your preferences and needs and verify whether we have all the information we need. If not, we may contact you at the e-mail address you have provided to further explore your preferences and needs.

Based on the information we have received, we will present you a preliminary offer, containing a preliminary sketch of the design and non-binding indications for the price and the delivery time.  Depending on your response, we will subsequently present a final offer, with a definitive sketch, a binding price and a non-binding indication for the delivery.

The order for your furniture piece is placed and binding once you have agreed in written form to the final offer and to these Terms and Conditions. This commits you to the purchase of the ordered piece and requires you to fulfill 75% of the agreed purchase price within 14 calendar days after your acceptance of the offer.

Once we have completed your furniture piece, we will send a notice of completion to the e-mail address you have provided, including photos from at least four different angles (frontview, sideviews, topview, and isometric view) and, where relevant, close-up views of details. You may also visit our atelier to examine the furniture piece.

You are required to fulfill the final 25% of the agreed purchase price within 14 calendar days after the date of the notice of completion. The piece will be shipped or can be picked up on a mutually agreed date, once the final quarter of the agreed purchase price is fulfilled.

If you fail or refuse to pay the final tranche of 25% of the purchase price within the specified term, Espenaer reserves the right to keep your initial payment of 75% of the purchase price as a compensation for its work. If after 30 calendar days from the date of the notice of completion we have still not received the final tranche of the purchase price, we reserve the right to offer the furniture piece in question for sale to other clients. In such case, you continue to hold the right to acquire the piece if you fulfill the payment of the final tranche, until it is purchased by another client.

If Espenaer fails to complete your furniture piece, you are entitled to a refund of your payment of 75% of the purchase price.

Espenaer reserves the right to not take up a request if it deems the request incompatible with its philosophy, values, aesthetic preferences, methods, or capacity. In such instances, we will always notify you of our decision.

Regular courses and workshops

Regular courses and workshops are offered on the Course section of our website. A regular course typically comprises a number of lessons or meetings with a particular program, whereas a ready workshop refers to a one-time activity, lasting between two and eight hours. Courses and workshops listed in this section will contain information about the setup, contents, objectives, size, level of difficulty, schedule, duration, frequency, and prices. All courses and workshops listed in this section are available for registration, unless a course or workshop is already full.

The registration procedure starts with selecting the preferred course or workshop in the Course section of the website and adding it to the Cart, and continues with the instructions on the Cart and Checkout pages. By adding a course or workshop to your Cart and proceeding to the Checkout page you confirm that you have carefully examined the available information about the said course or workshop and that you fully understand the offer.

By clicking the “Place order” button at the bottom of the Checkout page button you agree with these Terms and Conditions and confirm that you have provided accurate billing details.

By clicking the “Place Order” button you will also have confirmed the registration of the course or workshop in your Cart. This commits you to the payment of the total course fee according to the instructions and terms of the selected payment method, as defined on the Checkout page. If the payment term is unspecified for the selected payment method, the payment will have to be fulfilled within 14 calendar days after our confirmation of your order.

By clicking the “Place Order” button you give Espenaer permission to take photographs of you during the courses or workshops and share these on www.espenaer.com and Espenaer’s social media profiles. The photographs are used as documentation of activities at Atelier Espenaer and as promotional material in advertisements for Espenaer. You have the right to withdraw your consent and request the removal of photographs from www.espenaer.com, Espenaer’s social media profiles, and our office computer. You can communicate this by e-mail to info@espenaer.com.

Your registration is completed only if Espenaer has confirmed the reception of your registration and once the payment of the course fee is fulfilled.

Espenaer reserves the right to cancel the registration if you fail to fulfill your payment obligations within the specified term, if there is not more than one registered participant, and if external factors and conditions make it impossible for Espenaer to proceed with the course or workshop in question.

Custom courses and workshops

A custom course is a series of lessons or meetings with a program that specifically addresses the needs and desires of the client. A custom workshop is a one-time activity, lasting between two and eight hours on a single day, with a program that specifically addresses the needs and desires of the client.

Requests for custom courses and workshops preferably include a description of the setup, contents, objectives, size, target group, schedule, and duration of the desired course or workshop. The requests can only by submitted by email.

Submitting a request for a custom course or workshop by email does not immediately commit you to booking the said course or workshop and is free of charge. Once we have received your request, we will examine your preferences and needs and verify whether we have all the information we need. If not, we may contact you at the e-mail address you have provided to further explore your preferences and needs.

Based on the information we have received, we will present you a preliminary offer, containing a preliminary description of the course or workshop and non-binding indications for the price.  Depending on your response, we will subsequently present a final offer, with a definitive description and a binding price.

The custom course or workshop is booked and binding once you have agreed in written form to the final offer and to these Terms and Conditions. This commits you to the payment of the booked course or workshop and requires you to fulfill the agreed price within 14 calendar days after your acceptance of the offer.

If you fail or refuse to pay the agreed price within the specified term, Espenaer reserves the right to cancel your booking.

Espenaer reserves the right to not take up a request if it deems the request incompatible with its current schedule, capacity, philosophy, or values. In such instances, we will always notify you of our decision.

Course vouchers

A course voucher is a voucher that holds a certain value and may only be spent on courses and workshops. If a course voucher specifies or mentions a course or a workshop, its value is equal to the price of the mentioned course or workshop, and may only be spent on that course or workshop. If a course voucher does not specify or mention a course or a workshop, but instead mention a certain value, that value may be spent on any course or workshop, ready or custom.

Course vouchers are available for purchase in the Courses section of our website. The purchase procedure starts with adding the course voucher to the Cart and subsequently following the instructions on the Checkout page. By adding a voucher to your Cart and proceeding to the Checkout page you confirm that you have carefully examined the available information about the course voucher and that you fully understand the offer.

By clicking the “Place order” button at the bottom of the Checkout page button you agree with these Terms and Conditions and confirm that you have provided accurate billing details.

By clicking the “Place Order” button you will also have made a binding offer for the purchase of the course voucher, and if present, other items in your Cart. This commits you to the payment of the total purchase price according to the instructions and terms of the selected payment method, as defined on the Checkout page. If the payment term is unspecified for the selected payment method, the payment will have to be fulfilled within 14 calendar days after our confirmation of your order.

Your purchase of the course voucher is completed only if Espenaer has confirmed the reception of your order and once the payment of the purchase price is fulfilled.

Espenaer reserves the right to cancel the purchase if you fail to fulfill your payment obligations within the specified term or if external factors and conditions make it impossible for Espenaer to carry out the purchase.

Course vouchers cannot be redeemed.

Requests for course vouchers with custom values can only be submitted by e-mail.

Workspace bookings

Espenaer offers workspaces for rent through its booking system in the Workspace section of its website. A workspace is defined as the half of a workbench and includes at least one bench vise.

The use of a workspace includes the use of a designated set of standard tools, including a hand saw, hand plane, chisels, wooden hammer, square, marking knife, marking gauge, pencil, rule, and clamps. In consultation with the Espenaer instructor in the atelier, you may occasionally also use tools outside this standard set. To prevent accidents and damage to tools or the workspace, we require you to be familiar and experienced with the tools you intend to use. If tools or the workspace get damaged during your use, you agree to pay repair or replacement costs.

The use of a workspaces does not include the use of materials or supplies available in the atelier.

You agree to be self-reliant and independent while using the workspace and not obstruct the work of other users present in the atelier.

You may request assistance, instructions, advise, guidance, or a helping hand from an Espenaer instructor in the atelier for a fee. The amount of this fee depends on the kind and the content of the requested help. The requested help will only be offered once you have agreed to the fee, whether orally or in writing. When the help is requested at the spot, the fee will be charged afterwards by invoice.

Booking a workspace starts with selecting the preferred day and beginning and end times in the calendar in the Workspace section of our website and adding it to the Cart, and continues with the instructions on the Cart and Checkout pages. By adding a workspace booking to your Cart and proceeding to the Checkout page you confirm that you have carefully examined the available information about the booking and that you fully understand the offer.

By clicking the “Place order” button at the bottom of the Checkout page button you agree with these Terms and Conditions and confirm that you have provided accurate billing details.

By clicking the “Place Order” button you will also have confirmed the booking of the workspace on the given day and hours. This commits you to the payment of the total price according to the instructions and terms of the selected payment method, as defined on the Checkout page. If the payment term is unspecified for the selected payment method, the payment will have to be fulfilled within 14 calendar days after our confirmation of your booking.

Your booking is completed only if Espenaer has confirmed the reception of your booking and once the payment of the price is fulfilled.

Espenaer reserves the right to cancel the booking if you fail to fulfill your payment obligations within the specified term or if external factors and conditions make it impossible for Espenaer to proceed with the booking in question.
